Retrace Your Steps
No matter where your adventure takes you, you’ll never worry about getting lost with the Foretrex 301. Foretrex keeps track of your path and displays it as a dotted trail on the screen. Just turn on Foretrex’s TracBack® feature, and you can retrace your path back to where you started. You can save locations in memory as waypoints (up to 500 of them), so you can always find your way back to any important place, like your campsite or vehicle. And with up to 18 hours of battery life and replaceable AAA batteries, you’ll never worry about making it back.
Track Your Data
Foretrex 301 lets you combine several waypoints to create and store routes to all of your favorite places. It also provides other helpful information to help with navigation, including a trip computer, sunrise/sunset times and hunting and fishing information. To keep track of your trip, connect your Foretrex to your PC or Mac with USB to store your waypoints, routes and tracks on your computer.

When navigating a route on the GPS I receive the error ‘doesn’t match map’, why does this happen?
This message will appear for 2 reasons:
1. If you are creating the route in a different version of mapping on the PC to that of the version loaded on the GPS unit.
For example if you have v.8 loaded on the unit and v.7 on the PC.
2. If you have not got the map tiles of all the areas where your route is running through loaded on the GPS unit.
If you zoom out to 200 miles on the map screen you will see grey outlines of the map tiles, covering areas where the mapping is loaded.
If your route travels through an area of the mapping, which you have not loaded, you will receive this message
Can I use Rechargeable Batteries & recharge the batteries through an external power source?
You can use rechargeable batteries in the GPS. However, the unit cannot be used as a recharging device. When you connect an external power supply to the GPS, it will over ride the batteries and will not charge the batteries inside. You will need to have an external charger to maintain your batteries.
How do I setup my GPS when I go to other countries?
If you have a paper map of the area, it will indicate the position format and map datum you should use. Select those options, if available, in your unit.
If the map’s position format and map datum are not in the options list in your unit, complete the following steps:
Select User Grid for position format.
Enter an originating Longitude coordinate, which you can get from the paper map.
Enter a scale from the paper map.
Enter a false easting’s and false northing’s from the paper map. If these are not available you will need to contact the mapmaker for this information).
Select User for map datum.
Enter the DX, DY, DZ, DA and DF. You will need to contact the mapmaker for this information.
The unit now has a grid system that matches your paper map.
What is the difference between a Route and a Track?
A route is a pre-defined path containing waypoints, which are created before your walk.
A tracklog is a breadcrumb trail left behind you after a walk, so you can trace exact path you have walked. A tracklog contains track points and not waypoints.
A tracklog is different to a saved track. A saved track is a track you have saved; this can contain a maximum of 250 trackpoints. A saved track is a representation of the active track and strips 5 out of every 6 trackpoints as well as other information.
If you delete a Saved Track then this will not free up space in the Track log. The only way to free space is to clear the Track log. Alternatively you could use ‘Wrap’ so when the track log becomes full it continues tracking but erases the earliest track recorded.
